G. Zetzel thought fit to employ in his review of Sebastiano Timpanaro and Giuseppe Ramires, Carteggio su Servio (1993-2000), published in the BMCR dated 04.24.2014 (e.g., I quote from his review: «[…] the narrative that develops reveals a bright and frustrated young man seeking academic success»).
Instead, I wish to correct the following misinformation. In his review Mr. Zetzel accuses me of having misquoted certain dates of publication. It seems, however, that he himself is poorly informed on the point in question. He writes: «Ramires constantly cites Thilo in the notes as having been published 1878-81, when (as the bibliography knows) the publication dates of the three volumes are 1881, 1884, and 1887».
Despite Mr. Zetzel’s personal conviction, it remains a matter of fact that the Thilo edition of Servius' commentary on Virgil was published in the following order (as everyone who has held the work in his hands at least once may confirm):
In 1878: the first issue, containing the Servius commentary on Virgil's Aeneid 1-3;
In 1881: the second issue, containing the Servius commentary on Virgil's Aeneid 4-5;
In 1883: the third issue, containing the Servius commentary on Virgil's Aeneid 6-8;
In 1884: the fourth issue, containing the Servius commentary on Virgil's Aeneid 9-12;
In 1887: the fifth issue, containing the Servius commentary on Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics;
From this it results unfortunately that
the volume published in 1881 contained two issues, published respectively in 1878 and 1881;
the volume published in 1884 contained two issues, published respectively in 1883 and 1884;
Moreover, even in the reprint of the Thilo edition, published in 1961 by Olms (Hildesheim), one can easily read: «Reprographischer Nachdruck der Ausgabe Leipzig 1878-81».
Giuseppe RamiresAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
